See pic below. I'm trying to figure out a way to hold the grill about 1.5" below the lid. The fire box was cracked to the guy put a thin wall pipe with tabs and a steel grate to keep the charcoal off the bottom. What he was doing was just placing the grill on the pipe. I want to cut the pipe down some and suspend the grill somehow (because i feel that the areas outside the pipe aren't getting good heat).

My first idea was to drill a few locations and put small bolts sticking and place the grill on that. This would probably be adequate for simple grilling, but if i put a few pounds of meat on there for a slow cook, it might not be strong enough. Any other thoughts?

You could just cut slits or drill holes in the pipe so the heat can get out.
