What is it? And why is everybody talking about it all the time? And no I'm not kidding.

Just file downloading format that has become nothing more than a way for people to steal music, movies, and games instead of buying them.

Ok. A .torrent file is used with torrent programs (like BitTorrent or uTorrent) to connect to trackers for the purpose of exchanging data. Once connected to a tracker, you request data from it (a picture, movie, song, etc) and the tracker gets the already downloaded and stored data from another person's computer who is connected to the tracker. So, you download from other people around the world by their uploading to a tracker.

That's the best way I can describe it.

Edit: This is generally a much safer form of downloading than LimeWire and Kazaa for very obvious reasons.

Got it. So why do people need to be invited? Is it sorta closed to the general public?

Certain trackers have restrictions and are designed to track how much you download and upload. There are many torrent communities where you have to upload a certain amount of to ensure a healthy community and that each torrent can still be downloaded.

Sites like ThePirateBay and btjunkie are free and open to all, but private sites exist like what.cd and the one stout's threads.

Ok, so you are always connected to this "network" of people who are willing to share stuff?

same here.
i dont like virii and trojans and malware and worms

to further elaborate, clever internet people will encode malicious shite into "free gamez and m0viez!!~!#$" so while people are watching their precious bootleg shite, all their credit card info is being transmitted across the world wide web.

not all torrents obviously. but certainly some....

The malware in ads are trackers that they use to target relevant ads to your taste and search history.

Use Peerblock and it blocks these trackers as well as tons of other malicious stuff even when downloading torrents.

My laptop does this but not the old PC I use at work. I also don't think I'm a good candidate for torrents since my upload speed is only about 700kbps

That's a hell of a lot better than most people.
