Yea I have no idea what the frick any of this means, I just wanted to upgrade my card at some point

What cost is the wafer. Not the silicon wafer itself but the process of using UV sensitive syndrome to cut pathways into the silicon. The process takes the same amount of time even if you are producing 10 or 100 dies/chips from a single wafer. It still takes the same amount of time.
So if you can produce more chips per wafer, you can off a cheaper product.
