LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas and Hawaii will meet on the gridiron for the first time since 1985 when the Warriors travel to Lawrence in 2016 as the first part of a home-and-home series, it was announced Wednesday afternoon.
The 2016 home game for the Jayhawks is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, in Memorial Stadium. KU will travel to Honolulu for a return game at Aloha Stadium on Sept. 2, 2017.
"We are very excited to announce this home-and-home series with Hawaii," said Kansas head coach Charlie Weis. "We recognize Hawaii and the Islands as a fertile recruiting territory. Both our current players and prospects are excited that these two games are official.”

“I still think it would be the most successful college football endeavor that we can undertake,” he said. “Yes, we’re in discussions. It would be whatever the schools want it to be: two years or four years, alternate between St. Louis and Chicago or alternate between Champaign, Columbia and St. Louis. We just feel we bring something to the table to produce that game here relative to atmosphere, revenue and tradition. Both athletic directors have indicated a willingness to look at the game.”
The Tigers and Illini played at the Edward Jones Dome in 2002 and ’03 and again from 2007-10, drawing an average crowd of 62,753. Both schools were guaranteed an annual $1 million payday and collected as much as $1.3 million to play off campus.
Nothing is guaranteed at this point. Part of the waiting game involves the Southeastern Conference’s pending decision on whether to expand to a nine-game league schedule in 2016, the same year the Big Ten will move to nine games.
