With LSU's name left off Selection Sunday, it is now officially the post season. LSU ends 19-12 on the season, including a 10-10 record against SEC competition. They ended the year with an 86 RPI and a 91 KenPom computer ranking. Last year LSU ended the season with a 97 KenPom ranking, so LSU has improved their standing. They missed out on the NIT due to too many automatic bids being created (season champions losing conference tournaments).

LSU had a very good season and beat expectations. Very few people believed LSU would win more than 17 games this year. Getting to 19 wins makes Johnny Jones the second most successful 1st year coach in LSU history. More important than this current year's team, is the foundation Coach Jones has already built.

Wins (RPI) score:

Missouri (35) 73-70
Alabama (60) 97-94
Northwestern St (78) 102-95
Arkansas (92) 65-60
@Texas A&M (100) 68-57
Texas A&M (100) 58-54
Vanderbilt (108) 57-56
@UC-Irvine (126) 66-60
Seton Hall (137) 72-67
Georgia (140) neutral 68-63
South Carolina (227) 64-46
@Mississippi State (231) 69-68
Mississippi State (231) 80-68
UC-Santa Barbara (244) 77-63
Bethune Cookman (280) 79-63
Chattanooga (292) 80-67
Houston Baptist (315) 75-58
Mississippi Valley State (344) 75-50

Losses (RPI) score:

Florida (6) neutral 80-58
Florida (6) 74-52
@Marquette (12) 84-80
@Missouri (35) 89-76
@Boise St (41) 89-70
Ole Miss (50) 81-67
@Kentucky (57) 75-70
@Tennessee (59) 82-72
@Alabama (60) 60-57
@Georgia (140) 67-58
South Carolina (227) 82-73
@Auburn (250) 68-63

Surprises:

LSU's 19 wins - LSU wins 1 more game than last year after losing star Justin Hamilton. Very few people expected this team to hit 19 wins. Wins against Missouri and Northwestern State give the Tigers two victories over NCAA Tournament teams. LSU had 6 victories over top 100 RPI teams.

LSU's 12 losses - The Tigers had 15 losses last season. Unfortunately LSU did not schedule the maximum 13 OOC games and left two possible victories on the table.

Shavon Coleman - During preseason talk, JUCO transfer Shavon Coleman was not recognized as a vital part to this LSU team. Fortunately, Coleman came in and filled an enormous hole left by a depleted roster. He was fourth on the team with 10.5 points per game and second on the team with 5.9 rebounds per game. His 70.3% free throw shooting was vastly improved during SEC play.

Andrew Del Piero - Similarly to Coleman, Del Piero helped fill the most obvious hole in LSU's lineup at forward opposite O'Bryant. Del Piero averaged 13.6 minutes per game after playing only 12 career minutes before the season. He averaged 4.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. He shot a team high 55.1% from the field.

Andre Stringer's efficiency - Andre Stringer shot 29.5% from three point range as a freshman and 31.7% as a sophomore, but he was able to shoot a very good 40.9% from three point land as a junior. He made a career high 67 three's in his junior campaign.

LSU's press - Coming into the season LSU didn't expect to press much due to a short bench, but when LSU trailed against Seton Hall and needed a burst of energy, Johnny Jones drew up a trapping press that ended up being a positive surprise for LSU's season. The Tigers were second in steals per possession in the SEC and sixteenth overall.

Disappointments:

LSU's 0-4 SEC start - Two of the most perplexing and disappointing losses were in the first three games of the SEC schedule. LSU lost on the road to Auburn. LSU led at halftime 28-27 but were unable to hold onto the lead and lost by 5. After a big loss to Florida, LSU had their worse loss of the season at home against South Carolina. With multiple chances to win in the final minute, LSU was unable to put the Gamecocks away, and lost in overtime.

Last three halves of basketball - After taking a commanding 39-19 lead at halftime against Georgia, LSU played some of it's worst basketball of the season over the next three halves. Call it fatigue, but LSU looked less than spectacular. They gave up 44 points in the second half of UGA and were outscored by 15 and then lost to Florida by 22.

Anthony Hickeys Free Throw shooting - Anthony Hickey struggled last season hitting 55% of his free throws. LSU fans hoped it was a correctable problem that would be fixed over the off-season. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Hickey shot a measly 44% from the charity stripe on 20 of 45.

LSU's team free throw shooting - Johnny Jones teams have historically shot a very high percentage from the free throw line. This team didn't. Their team free throw percentage of 62.5% was 13th worst in the NCAA and last in the SEC. The Tigers shot under 50% from the free throw line in six games.

NIT Selection committee - There were 11 teams who got into the NIT tournament with lower RPI's than LSU. A few of them were not automatic bids. The SEC only received 6 bids to post season tournaments this year.

Grades:

Johnny O'Bryant - (A) led the SEC in double doubles. He was a 1st team All-SEC selection. He led the team in points per game and rebounds per game. After starting the year slow, he really came on toward the end of the season. His turnaround was spurred by finally getting healthy, as well as his new-found ability to pass out of a double team.

Charles Carmouche - (A) came into the season as an unknown. He left as a shutdown defender and efficient scorer. He was third on the team in scoring and second in assists and steals. He shot 37.1% from three point range (2nd on team) and 67% from the free throw line (3rd on team). He will be the biggest loss of the off-season as the senior has run out of eligibility.

Anthony Hickey - (A-) scored 11.2 points (2nd on team) and led the team with 3.8 assists per game. He built an impressive 2.1 ast/to ratio and was third in the NCAA in steals at 2.9 per game. Unfortunately, Hickey was suspended on two different occasions. He also shot a measly 38.6% from the field and only 44% from the free throw line. At times Hickey couldn't miss, and at other times he couldn't make a basket to save his life. He was named to the SEC's All-Defensive team.

Andre Stringer - (A-) was brilliant this year. He hit 40.9% of his three point shots. He was the first Tiger to shoot over 40% (min 15 attempts) since Bo Spencer in 2008-2009 (Collins did this as well). Stringer also led the team with a 73.7% free throw percentage. He also played very pesky defensively and took on some taller shooting guards and gave them all they could handle.

Shavon Coleman - (B+) played the undersized power forward position about as well as you can. He rebounded well, scored in transition, and averaged nearly 1 block per game. He averaged 1.4 steals per game and was a vital part of LSU's press. He will bring senior leadership next season, but will probably come off the bench and play on the perimeter.

Malik Morgan - (B) scored 163 points as a freshman. He was at his best shooting off the pass or driving to the rim. His length and athleticism gave him the ability to get to the rim almost at ease. He was sometimes a step behind on defense and will need to work on his footwork.

Andrew Del Peiro - (B-) is the most improved basketball player I have ever seen. He played only 12 career minutes before the season, and averaged 13.6 minutes per game this season. He scored 13 points against Mississippi State and was able to give the Tigers a lengthy forward. He is destined to play professionally in Europe.

Eddie Ludwig - (C+) had his season cut short due to two concussions. The senior however struggled early in the season. It looked as if he was turning the corner making 7 of his last 11 shots of the season before hitting the bench. He took 6 charges in the 9 games he played in and always seemed to be in the right position to make plays. A great four year Tiger who will make way for the new regime of Tigers.

Shane Hammink - (C+) struggled in his first season at LSU. The freshman showed lots of promise later in the year coming in at the 4 spot, but his future is as a slashing three position from the perimeter. He had two double figure scoring nights and had 4 rebounds in 8 minutes against Arkansas.

Corban Collins - (C) shot remarkably well (12/26 from 3pt) but had trouble holding down the backup point guard spot due to some careless turnovers. Collins future probably lies in the backup shooting guard role rather than point guard.

Jalen Courtney - (C) was one of the few possible forwards to take advantage of Justin Hamilton leaving early. Unfortunately, he had trouble playing strong in the paint. Even at 6'9" he has some work to do getting his frame and body ready to battle with the bigs. He was an obvious team leader who led LSU in their pregame "circles" and had an obvious presence on the bench. While his role on the court was limited, his role as a motivator and leader was under-appreciated.

Johnny Jones - (A-) led LSU to a very impressive 19-12 season. There were however a couple "what just happened" moments. Losses to sub-200 RPI teams is unacceptable. LSU had two of them. However, He was able to succeed as a game coach and made some in-game situation decisions that directly led to wins. He was given a depleted roster and turned them into an NIT bubble team. LSU ended the year with their best RPI since 2008-2009 and he brings in a top ten recruiting class.

'12-'13 Synopsis:

LSU went 9-2 in out of conference and 10-10 in conference to end the season 19-12. Coach Jones was able to win the 2nd most games out of any LSU first year coach. LSU was able to finish in the top 90 in RPI and won some great games, including home games versus Alabama and Missouri. LSU was 1 game away from finishing 6th in the SEC regular season and likely 1 game out of the NIT Tournament.

Expectations were for LSU to finish the season with 15-17 wins, so LSU was able to do very well in finishing with a 61.3% winning percentage. LSU will be in much better shape come next season.

Great job.

The big thing, for me, is that the team got better as the year went on. Yes, the team started 0-4 in the SEC, and had perhaps its two worst losses of the season in that stretch. but the team played better from that point on and at least got itself in the discussion for the postseason.

This was a building year, and you could see the team come together. Hopefully, more of that next year.

As a graduating senior who has gone to as many games as I could over the last four years, this team was a sight for sore eyes. My dad always told me about how much fun the PMAC used to be back when he was in school. I could see glimpses of that this year with this team and Coach JJ's exciting, physical style of basketball. LSU Basketball has bright days ahead of it. And I will soon be putting in my order for a set of season tickets. Thank you SOS for the work this season, and above all else

I'll be honest, I hated the Jones hire, but he outdid anything I had in mind, I was very surprised. Can't wait to see this team the next few years..

hickey has to improve his foul shooting. it will help out in so many ways. the mor ehe gets to the rim and gets fouled and hits some, it will open up more options and make things easier on him. if he can just get to near 70% it will be a huge plus.

i want johnny to test the waters but come back. i think that would be the best thing for him. if so i think we will be really good.

team defense on the perimeter needs to improve. our help defense was better than i thought it'd be so if we can even improve there it is just a bonus. we'll have more depth and the ability to run out some different personnell combinations in situations. we've just got to get better at contesting shots. how many threes did florida take the other day where our guy didn't even have his hand up?

team definitely exceeded my expectations. i had us around 17-12 in my most optimistic prediction. we came along once o'bryant got healthy. his conditioning improved leaps and bounds from last year even in spite of those early season injuries. if he doesn't get hurt at marquette i think we go 2-1 at worst against uga, aub and sc in that early season swoon.

lot to look forward too and i am very excited.
