They still make them and they supposedly work very well if you keep the blades sharp and keep your grass short.

I had a reel mower at my last house, worked really good, just have to keep the grass cut on a regular basis. To me the reel mower cuts better than a gas one.

A friend in Europe has a Husqvarna automatic one. It cuts every day and charges every night. The lawn looks like a golf course and is not very big.
Also it is inside a fence which helps to keep it from walking away. I thought about getting one for my house but I guarantee I come home and it would be stolen in a few weeks. It does not work without the matching base station but the people who would steal it do not know that.
