You're spot on with this. Star Trek didn't predict flip phones, flip phones were created because Star Trek communicators opened that way. More often than not, modern technology is inspired by and modeled after some previous science fiction creation.

This is so weird because my dad and I were discussing this same topic a few days ago. We both agreed that our world today is created from the ideas in movies.
