trespassing question UPDATE

my parents live in fernewood in lafayette. in the way back, there's this giant gully that leads to this cleared out wooded area that is cut off by a chain. my 4 wheeler fits under the chain.
I went back there despite the chain and it's tons of 4 wheeler trails, mud piles, paths through the woods, and big trenches. it's amazing. No signs of the people building anything, and it's been pretty static for a few years. Think I'm gonna go ride back there later on.
If I would happen to get caught, could I say I got back there from a way other than under the chain and that I didn't see any trespassing signs? There are none up ANYWHERE and I could defiintely see someone getting back there and not knowing about the chain.
On another note, how would I go about finding the owner and asking his permission to ride?
TIA

All private land in Louisiana is posted.
Go to the courthouse and pull up the records to see who owns it. If they have had problems in the past and you get caught, it wont be good for you.
ETA: One might not know about the gate and go around it, but one knows for sure that they do not own that land. Just like shooting a gun through your door is not okay, you must know whats behind it.

Might go to jail not just a fine if I've had enough problems

Confiscation of your ATV, confiscation of your truck, charged with trespassing, taken and held in jail until the property owners can be contacted, etc.
This the worse case scenario, but possible.

If it aint your land and you are on it without permission its trespassing no matter how you got there.
Tax assessors office will have the info on who owns it

confiscation is only on 3rd and after offense
Ill take the chance this afternoon and see what its like back there. If it's badass, I'm gonna get in touch with landowner and ask his permission to ride

Green Jeans will confiscate your ATV and truck if they want to. Try it.

FACT. I know a not so smart individual this happened to. And to top it off he spent the night in jail.

Also keep in mind if caught, any ruts etc could be put on you as damage to property

Dont get me wrong, Ive done it before. Never got caught and damn good thing. It would have kept me from getting my job with the state and now my current job. Also, I could have not afforded the fines.

Look at it from another angle. Do you want to be listing this arrest on your CC application? Do you want to risk getting denied a CCL? If you have a gun and are trespassing in TX, I believe it gets bumped up to a felony???
