HS vs NFL

A deeper look into that number everyone seems to be oh so obsessed about.

Alabama offensive lineman D.J. Fluker, who ran a 4.9 second 40-yard dash in high school despite weighing 350 pounds and perpetually looking like he smelled fish, added 0.41 seconds to his 40 time by the end of his four years with Nick Saban.

Sam Montgomery ran a 4.44 in high school? I guess that's why he was called Sonic Sam

Recently I saw a list of 40 times from one of the local high schools. I saw a kid with a 4.27. That's just ridiculous and untrue. It also makes you question these ridiculous results reported on lifts in bench press, squat, hang clean, etc. I would like to see laser timed 40's and lifts without a spot plus forcing the kids to use perfect form.

Mingo, Simon, Ford, Reid, Edwards & Mathieu ran as good, if not better than their HS times.

Lonergan coming out of HS was 288# and had a 4.78sec shuttle time, not 40 yd dash.

He is currently around 305, so he put 15-20# on during college and 4.78 HS 40 is probably a journalistic error on the part of SB Nation.

ETA: SM99 came out of HS weighing anywhere from 230-240. He weighed in out the combine at 262. 25-30# makes a difference when you are at a position that needs speed.
