He didnt specify modern era..... He specifically said that we should choose from any era.
When I thought he was talking modern era I said black keys or maybe WSP or Phish.... That maybe was depending on how far you would extend the extremely malleable term "modern era"
Govt mule isn't known enough to be the greatest. The greatest should be a household name. Everyone in America should've heard at least one song by the "Greatest American Rockband" or at the very least heard their name.
Black keys is really the only option IMO.
Now if we're talking all time it has to be The ABB, The Grateful Dead or CCR.
They're the only ones that combine legacy, musicianship and popularity at a high enough degree IMO. No one HATES those three bands and everyone can sing along to one of their songs.

then it's even more simple.
elvis presley and the jordinares.
i wouldn't know a black keys if I heard them.
CCR is a sham. "born on the bayou" --- whatever.
obviously The Dead and ABB are personal favorites. on any given night both were capable of being the greatest, --- or the worst. that made them the most exciting.
talking heads, ramones, alex chilton have to be considered.
REM brought us all back from the electronic music that ecstasy led us to believe sounded good.
all that being said, but from a technical stand point of "greatest", I'll go with North Mississippi Allstars followed closely by Mule.
NMAS gets the nod because of percussion.

Allman Brothers Band & The Greatful Dead are the two greatest America rock bands of all time. Duane Allman is the kicker for AAB. He was an unreal guitar player unrivaled in many ways.
The Doors would be my third choice. I would put them first but the jam band geeks would have a fit.
