Need Help Selecting Pump Shotgun of Choice...

My mother just had to go through having some a**hole attempt a home invasion while she was in the house.
She has had limited gun training and wants a reliable but cheap as possible pump shotgun as a home defense weapon. I am leaning towards getting her something light like a 20ga Remington 870 or Mossberg500.
Any ideas? Thanks ahead of time.

Standard response will be an 870 20ga. with buckshot

why not a 12 gauge?
Unless she's a mighty sturdy woman shell probably have trouble handling the recoil.

She's a scrawny old lady with a replacement knee--i think 20ga is maxed out for her haha

If you could find an older model 870 in .410 that would be a good option too.

I would go with a 20 gauge 870.

I would seriously consider even getting a youth model of one of these weapons, depending on the stature and upper body strength of your mother.
20ga is a good choice for a female - you get 75% of the lead for about half the recoil. #4 Buck (in 20 gauge) is a good compromise between stopping power and interior wall penetration, although the #4 buck will tear stuff up. You could go with a larger birdshot, like a #5 (common in Turkey loads), but a 20 gauge is not nearly as likely to be lethal with that in household ranges as a similar load out of a 12 gauge.

870 youth 20ga full of buckshot and as much practice as she can stand.

Sort of on topic, what load should I look for in a 12 gauge home defense shell?
