I think the key problem with Star Wars is that they aren't really that good and no one is willing to admit it.

They are such a huge part of the popular culture that any kind of criticism will be rejected and the criticizer will be accused of being a "contrarian" or some shite.

And I'm saying this and yet I was a MAJOR Star Wars nerd growing up. I fricking loved those movies so damn much.

But let's face it, except for Empire, none of them really holds up, and even Empire, while decent, isn't really a great film.

Empire has probably the most iconic scene and greatest twist in movie history. I just don't know how it can be proposed as merely decent: LINK

They are popular because when they came out they were game changers. Compare them to what came before them. You also had some real good actors in Harrison Ford and others. Visually it was a huge experience for the viewer. It ran for MONTHS at the theater. Mr. Lepine at Episcopal High saw it like 30 times or so.
