I use live bait if I can catch it or conveniently get to the boat to buy some. I use artificial most of the year, but holy shite, it's crazy when you get on the live bite on the islands in the summer. I'm sure someone will come in here and call me out saying I'm "not a real fisherman" blah blah blah, but with gas prices how they are, I'll do whatever it takes to get fish in the boat without having to run around bay hopping all weekend.

I use live bait for big specks in the ship shoal area from mid july to mid august.

I've had on more than one occasion this happen to me. I'd be at one of the SS or EI rigs catching trout every throw on artificials and have a boat from Cocodrie area pull up around the corner with live bait and shut us down completely. Damnedest thing I've ever seen.

We get it during the summer months when we can, if you're spending all that money on gas, might as well spend a little more and be prepared if that's all they want.
We're quick to go to plastic when we get 'em a frenzy though.
