I just moved to Dallas area. My property taxes are about $3k a year after homestead exemption, but my homeowners insurance is only $900 a year. Plus no state income tax and I can deduct the property tax on my federal return. It's actually less than what I was paying for homeowners in Metairie(and I didn't even make a Katrina claim). Plus, my house is nicer with a bigger lot than my house in Metairie.
As for those property taxes, I don't mind paying them too much when you see the awesome school system in Richardson, the services offered, parks, etc. Quality of life is much better.
