I have watched some videos on Youtube this afternoon. It looks like they carve on the trunk about once a year to shape it.

I don't either. In my quest for a purchased bonsai, I've been researching. I'd like a time lapse tutorial if someone finds one

So they carve into the trunk-like a slit-and train branch into slit and then slit closes over branch?

The trunk is cut off just above where a branch is growing. The branch is bent straight upward and wired into place to grow that way. Every situation is a little different, but usually, this can be done so that in a few years, it looks like the trunk grew that way naturally.

Good thread here. I have several Bonzai at my place. I have a nice little boxwood as my favorite. I tried cypressa about. Five years ago-the digging it up way. I had one live six months and I determined to learn more before another attempt. I need a place to find some in the wild in order to harvest them and give it another shot.
