Can anyone explain what exactly power rankings mean for a HS Football team?

I was told the answer to the below question was: Helps Power Rankings.

Question: why would a 1A football team EVER play a 5A team

Example on 6 Sept 2013, Redemptorist High School 1A scheduled to play Terrebonne High School 5A

A LOSS iS A LOSS??

If you play a good game against a 5a school you would move up in power rankings and would give you a better seed over teams with a similar record. Remember that the district record is more important than the out of district

A school gets 2 points for each class they play up. In the case of a 1A school playing a 5A school, they get 8 points automatically for playing the game- win or lose. Then they receive 1point for every game their opponent wins.

If Redemptorist (1A) loses to a 5 win Terrebonne (5A) team, RHS will get 13 points in a losing effort, the same number of points they would receive for beating a 3 win 1A team. Playing up has its benefits, especially if you play a team that can win a few games for you. If you can steal a win, it is a huge power point producer. Hopefully, that sheds some light.

Just play Parkview and lose 98-0 again.

The question is why don't small schools play shitty 5A teams every chance they get? A win over a winless 5A team would give them 18 points.

The question really is...why would a 5A team bother to even play s 1A team? It probably kills their power rating...

no it doesn't... let's say you play an absolute WAR and lose to a 10-0 John Curtis team at the end.

you get more points for an embarrasing 24-23 win against Ecole Classique

Yeah...not at all. It's a simple formula. You get 10 points for a win plus 1 additional point for every win that team has at the end of the year. You aren't penalized for playing down, only rewarded for playing up. So 5A against pretty much anyone will receive the same points prerecord. So if Ouachita beats Evangel and Evangel goes 9-1, Ouachita gets 19 points for that win. Meanwhile if Ouachita beat a winless school of any classification they would only receive 10 points.

Now as far as losses, you only get what that team wins. So yeah you could get 10 points for losing to Curtis, but beating anyone with a single win would be more valuable.
