re: Any other Star Trek:TOS fans hate the Abrams stuff?

I don't want this to be completely negative on the film, so, I can say these nice things:

The opening space combat scene was excellent.

Despite no history in the canon for Kirk's father being a starship captain or that he was born on a starship apparently signficantly more advanced than the one he commanded 35 years later, I could accept that as fairly decent opening barrage (literally and figurative) I understand our ADHD society and that you have to grab the audience's attention.

Overall the action sequences were visually and audially stunning

Even though I only watched it on the small screen, I was able to grasp the scope of the vision Abrams wanted for these scenes. The fact that he went down a checklist, "Space Combat, check, car chase, check, freefall sequence, check, planet destruction like in Star Wars? Check and check" is beside the point

Some of the acting performances really leapt out based on effort and the care the actors (if not the screenwriters and director) had for the TOS characters

I single out Quinto and Urban as being the closest to the original characters in their composition, although the material and directing ultimately led to their failure to deliver. However, they get an A (maybe Urban a B+) for effort in this area.

The pacing of the film was pretty even and consistent - there were few jarring moments

The director had a clear vision of action sequence, boring talking, action sequence, boring talking, etc. They were evenly timed and paced, with just enough variety so that there was something for everybody. The timing of the Nimoy scene was spot on - seeing him too early would have reminded us of how good TOS was versus this film - having him too late would have seemed much more like a stunt (which it was, but fairly well executed - I guess I'm grasping at the only thing that really was from TOS in the entire movie).


Satisfied? I said a bunch of good things about the movie.
