I recently checked two shot guns and ammo with no problems or extra charges. This was a couple months ago

Just make sure to not have an empty magazine in your carry on. Watched a TSA agent confiscate an empty M-9 mag from an Army LT in uniform headed overseas because she forgot it was in her bag.
