Winning is what matters.

SF was pretty close to achieving this.

See: Mark Sanchez a few years ago
ETA the jets are basically salary cap screwed bc of the contract they gave sanchez and he is no where near $20million.

I think Eli is the perfect comp. Eli is a better than average QB with an inflated rep due to the Super Bowl rings. But, he exceeds the minimum standard for what a legit contender needs at QB. You cannot skimp at the QB position and win.
Reminds me more of Troy Aikman. Talented, but unspectacular/disappointing regular season numbers. But also has some really good playoff runs.

Doesn't mean they can't keep building around Flacco
How many teams in the past have let a QB as good as him walk, with no one in the wings, & hoped to land someone in the draft or FA?
Losing Lewis & possibly Ed Reed doesn't mean they should just throw in the towel & rebuild. This isn't Madden

I understand Sanchez had a nice playoff run, but are people still honestly putting him in Flacco's class?
Stop being a retard & mentioning those 2 in the same breath

probably not many, but how many are burdened by horrible cap hits? i mean the saints are proper fricked by brees's deal. the jets are fricked by sanchez's deal.
just because other teams feel forced doesn't mean it's the right move for the ravens. they've already proven that they can win a super bowl with a mediocre QB

it's a lot easier to replace guys like that in madden

The Saints aren't fricked by Brees' deal because they will have a great offense as long as he is there. They are more fricked by other deals to overrated players on the defense(smith, Harper, Vilma to extent )
Sanchez is a bad contract . Period.
All teams are burdened by cap hits. You have to pay good players.
How many teams in the playoffs have cheap QBs that aren't on their 1st contract? That's just the reality of the NFL.
There haven't been many mediocre QBs to win SB in the last 2 decades.
& far as Lewis, he is prob the 6 or 7th best player on the defense at this point. I don't think you throw in the towel cause you lose him

Drew Brees can carry a well coached team
I'm not sold at all that joe flacco can do that

Far easier to find cheap replacements at S and ILB than at QB.

No, flacco played well (above expectations) for a very talented team and helped them win a SB. He didn't drag them there. That's what you pay $20 million for
Posted on 2/4/13 at 2:43 pm to DelU249
I don't think I even compared the 2.
I don't think Eli manning can carry a team like brees can, or Big Ben for that matter. They've led their teams to multiple Super Bowls.

You said you're fine with paying Brees that kind of money. I'm just trying to explain why I agree with that notion and wouldn't pay flacco that kind of money.
Eta: or why the saints are in good shape and the ravens wont be when they fork over that kind of money

He played just as well in the playoffs as Brees did in 09. To say he just played "well" is a pretty big understatement.

He's not going to consistently give you that performance during the regular season or at the very least hasn't shown that he can.
Brees, Brady, Manning and Rodgers are putting up great numbers and doing so consistently with meh talent at WR/RB. Thats worth $20 million.

QB play =/= success on the field
Um, yes it is. Notice anything about the "elite" QBs? They all have winning records, and almost all of them have at least one Superbowl ring.

There are awesome QBs with mediocre w/l records
Depends on what you consider mediocre. Earlier in this thread, I asked:
quote:
Can [anyone] name ONE great QB (past or present) who didn't/doesn't have a good W/L ratio?
No legitimate answer has been provided yet.

So the question becomes this:
Is Eli's contract crippling the Giants?

They wouldn't have with a deal like mannings
JPP
Tuck
Harrison
Woodley
Troy P
Rolle
Now if you draft crazy good every year and get instant impact players in low rounds, you can certainly survive paying guys like that 1/6 of your salary cap

He wasn't in the top 10 of base salaries last year among QBs
