He might need to lighten up and I might need to post less (I thought this thread was general enough for me to comment on without being entirely ignorant as I am a noob).

Landon Donovan is an elite athlete
It's about context. His physical attributes translate extremely well to what he does on the field. He's very, very quick. He's not a freak show of an all-around athlete, but for what he does, you could consider him very athletic.
Same with Lionel Messi. I wouldn't consider him to be a great all-around athlete, but for soccer, he is certainly an elite athlete.

I love that!

what a passive aggressive fgt...you and that other guy take this board and your soccer expertise too seriously.

Soccer is more of a contact sport than football, Landon Donovan is an elite athlete, Kobi jones > Adrian Peterson, etc
I want to come back to this.
No one on here is going to agree with one or three of that statement (contact and Cobi Jones), or at least I don't think. Saying that LD is an elite athlete depends on your definition of elite, really.
So, yeah, I guess I'm not like the guys from your HS, but I would say that 90% of the people on here aren't, either.

The cobi jones one was a joke but some friends were trying to convince me of the first part a while back.
LD I agree on... not in the context of raw talent discussed in thread though. I'm outta here, tired of these back and forth threads on here.

I don't understand why people automatically think that if someone plays soccer then they are no where near the athleticism of football/basketball players.
Just about all professional soccer players are elite athletes, as are just about all football and basketball players.
You have to be an elite athlete to be a professional player. I would say Cron is one of the best athletes in the world with AP and LBJ.

The US doesn't need the country's top athletes to succeed.
no it doesn't, but people will always wonder what we could do IF our top athletes played
i could only imagine what kind of butt fricking a lebron james or josh smith could do on a soccer field
our athletes are so freakish that a 6-9 guy who has a better speed/strength combo than any current soccer player could realistically have developed into a top dribbler/passer of the ball
it's that tantalizing fantasy that keeps people coming back to the argument, and you're never going to get away from it

like Crouch?
at best, one in twenty (maybe more) would result in a Yaya Touré. At best.
beaucoups fail

You do realize that Landon Donovan is essentially Wes Welker without steroids, right?
wes welker isn't considered an elite athlete though. not even close

Even NBA basketball requires more overall athleticism than the soccer.
even?
basketball (at an elite level) requires the freakiest of freak athletes
i don't think you people truly appreciate what kind of coordination is required of a 6-7+ player to handle and pass the ball, on top of the base level requirements of strength/speed/quickness/reactions in top level basketball

Basketball is like soccer on a smaller court, with less running, more timeouts and more stoppage of play. So I am gonna have to disagree with you on that one.
basketball is certainly more anaerobic but don't be dense. the NBA is filled with the world's biggest freaks of athletes, with the NFL coming in a close second

None, really, unless our developmental system changed.
