Those two are going to be nasty and great additions to that loaded 2012 LB class

People been sleeping on Melvin Jones

Big ups to Chief. I don't think LSU has ever been as loaded at Linebacker as we will be starting next year. We've usually had one standout, maybe 2 with Faulk and James, but I think next year you will start to see very talented linebackers across the board.

When Chavis came in, his specialty was LBs. I've been waiting for that to be a strong suit since he got here.

Beckwith will be playing with his hand in the dirt. Not a Chavis OLB ...
So will Jones if he doesnt get on a nutrition plan when he gets to LSU. If Jones can get down to 235-240 then hes going to be all sec at MLB.

I can't imagine both of these players being at DE. LSU has recruited several DE's in the this class--need an athletic, hard hitting inside linebacker & surely at least one of these will step forward.
By the way, is Jones going to have any problems qualifying with the NCAA Clearinghouse? Seems like some previous posts mentioned this was a possibility.

I think Beckwith will be a hybrid LB/DE. While he may line up with a hand in the dirt, he might peel back and play LB, especially against spread offenses. Let's also not forget that both Beckwith and Jones played QB in high school and both might get some wildcat snaps.
Jones wants to compete. So I'm confident he will stay active and keep his weight below 255 upon his arrival at LSU this summer. Very likely he will play MLB at about 245. I've seen him play on both sides of the ball at 245 and shine regardless of all the snaps. He has good speed and agility for a kid his size.
I think MLB is Melvin's destiny. However, as a freshman with such athleticism (proven on the field), to get some playing time he might even get some snaps at TE, and not just to be a blocking TE but also a passing target.
If Jones was not so good at MLB, I could easily imagine him playing FB/TE.
Bottom line: Both Beckwith and Jones are talented athletes, and the coaching staff will use them in ways to help the team. Ditto for Jeryl Brazil.

He was that size as a high school junior. He's gonna be Kelvin Sheppard size as a freshman at LSU. Dude is naturally big.

Lionel Turner played MLB at 260 his junior and senior years. Not that it would help if Jones lost a little weight but just saying.

Junior and senior years in HS or college? Melvin Jones is already that big in HS. Turner also played in Saban's 3-4 where he prefers his LB's to be built more like DE's.

Hopefully, these guys will turn out to be a Faulk/James kind of duo. Imagine a pair of LBs like that behind our annual DL.

It was college. LSU ran a 4-3 during that time. DL was Spears, Williams, Lavalais and Hill.

You're right about the 4-3. I kept thinking that LSU ran a 3-4 at that time because of the connection with Saban/Muschamp and with so many defensive front 7 players from that period winding up in 3-4 defenses in the NFL. It was crazy that Marcus Spears was a 300 pound DE in a college 4-3.

Even crazier that he was recruited as a TE and for basketball.
