The Wire - Why No Blu Ray?
Website won't pull up for me for some reason, but if you google "the wire's visual style" and click on the slate.com link, there's a very good video essay and article that talks about why they leave it in 4:3 and not hd. I think the article even mentions a David Simon quote on the matter.

Wrong aspect ratio, I think.
I remember it not being in widescreen.

I never understood the appeal of BluRay. Unless it's a nature show, I don't want BluRay. You can see too many flaws in BluRay. Give me regularD all day.
Edit: Changed HD to BluRay.

You must be a woman. I'm 100% convinced women can't see in HD. I have Directv, so the option of HD is taken away, when HD is available, but before, every girl i dated would start watching stuff on the non hd channels. I would tell them to change it to the HD station and they'd question, then we'd switch to it, and they'd say, "I can't tell the differnce".
I am to the point, that i'd rather not watch the show if it is not in HD. It just looks so much clearer. However, MIlitary channel and H2 aren't HD, but it's the only place to get history programs.

Not a woman. And HDTV is not the same as BluRay.
Go watch Lord of the Rings on BluRay and tell me it's better. It's fricking horrendous. Every flaw is shoved in your face.
Edit: Meant to stick to BluRay in original post. HDTV is great. BluRay movies are vomit.

+1
I think its a scientific thing. My wife can't even tell the difference during football or basketball games which I think is the easiest to notice the difference...

Unless it's sci-fi or action I don't really care if it's bluray or not. I will not watch non-HD channels on television though.

Even the 4:3 aspect ratio—which has, according to Lavik, become rare among cable's prestige dramas—was chosen by Simon because it seemed less inherently cinematic, more "real." (Lavik points out, however, that directors on the series often constructed a widescreen effect by shooting with a long lens across a blurry, horizontal object in the foreground, as in the scene with Mayor Carcetti and Bunny Colvin pictured above.)

I would really like an HD version of Frisky Dingo.

Feel like adding anything else? Go watch any action sequence in BluRay and you'll want to vomit. It's like watching a school play. Swords missing by a mile. Punches missing by a mile. Some things are better left to the imagination.
But overall good input. You've done a great job furthering the discussion.
