Maybe 5-10 years ago when teams relied on a smaller core of pass catchers this would've mattered. Now a lockdown corner doesn't really do much against 4 and 5 wide sets, elite TE, and pass catching rbs.
Several people have said this in the thread and I disagree with it
It's a numbers game. You still need to put 2 on their top guy. If you have a corner that can take away their top guy by himself that frees up another defensive back to help elsewhere.

Not to mention he's missed a ton of games due to injury. Wish him the best of luck outside of NY

yes but you're seeing more and more that the truly good passing teams (those with elite qbs especially) aren't reliant on that 1 guy nearly as much. Is the saints offense killed when Colston is locked down? NE with Lloyd? Green Bay with Jennings? etc
With the evolution of the TEs in the passing game and qbs spreading it around more and more taking 1 guy away at the expense of quality on the rest of the defense is foolish. Especially when only a handful of guys truly require that double team week in and week out.

This is not gonna happen. Better chance a few years ago but not after injury.
Also teams are more concerned with pash rush. Most teams have so many receiving options that they can give up one receiver.

Right
But the fact still remains. If your #1 corner can shut down their #1 WR by himself, that frees up more people to do other things. i.e. you can double the slot or bring someone on a blitz
It still frees up a man no matter how you slice it.

There are more than a "handful" of guys that command double teams in the NFL

Sweet, the jets following back in the pits of the NFL where they belong.

Who the frick is his agent? Dude holdout every offseason.
He's probably one the athletes I actually "HATE" and I don't usually hate athletes. The guy acts like he's poor and hurting.

I don't really get what you're arguing. Are you actually justifying that a dominant corner is worth paying what is near elite qb money?
I don't deny that having a great corner aids a defense. I maintain its not as useful as it was when fewer receivers were used and there were more traditional one on one match ups throughout the game. Those resources can be used much better .
