Poutine. (I had to look it up to remember the name) I have seen this on the Food Netowrk before.
The mom n pops place here in town will put brown gravy with onion on your fries if you ask. When I get the hamburger steak from there I get fries covered in gravy. It is probably similar to what you are talking about.
