41st President George H. W. Bush as a 19 year old Naval Aviator.

Lt. JG Bush being rescued by a US sub after being shot down.
quote:

After Bush was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade on 1 August, San Jacinto commenced operations against the Japanese in the Bonin Islands. On 2 September 1944, Bush piloted one of four aircraft from VT-51 that attacked the Japanese installations on Chi Chi Jima. For this mission his crew included Radioman Second Class John Delaney, and Lieutenant Junior Grade William White, USNR, who substituted for Bush's regular gunner. During their attack, four TBM Avengers from VT-51 encountered intense antiaircraft fire. While starting the attack, Bush's aircraft was hit and his engine caught on fire. He completed his attack and released the bombs over his target scoring several damaging hits. With his engine on fire, Bush flew several miles from the island, where he and one other crew member on the TBM Avenger bailed out of the aircraft. However, the other man's chute did not open and he fell to his death. It was never determined which man bailed out with Bush. Both Delaney and White were killed in action. While Bush anxiously waited four hours in his inflated raft, several fighters circled protectively overhead until he was rescued by the lifeguard submarine, USS Finback. For this action, Bush received the Distinguished Flying Cross. During the month he remained on Finback, Bush participated in the rescue of other pilots.

No he did not and he received a huge amount of criticism because of that. In reality, the child was not in real danger. The photo was taken at an aid station where food was being handed out. The mother was just out of the photo.

Saw this photo last week when people were talking about Stan Musial and his passing. This is Musial with JFK at the 62 All-Star Game.

In the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, they have a yellow-colored trainer aircraft that was used at NAS Pensacola during WWII. It's hanging in one of the expansion wings. When they opened the wing, HW was president and showed up to cut the ribbon.

As he toured the museum, he noticed the plane and told his aide to write down the tail number. A week later, the museum received a package from the White House: George HW Bush's personal flight logs from the period showing that the plane on display in the museum was the one that he learned to fly with.

Talk about coincidence.

Comdr. Jeremiah A. Denton, Jr. - Report from Inside a Hanoi Prison, 1966

On July 18, 1965, U.S. Navy Comdr. Jeremiah A. Denton, Jr., was shot down while leading an air attack on a military installation in North Vietnam. Captured by the North Vietnamese that day, he remained a prisoner of war for seven years and seven months, enduring years of solitary confinement and brutal mistreatment.

On May 2, 1966, as part of a propaganda campaign, the North Vietnamese arranged for him to be interviewed for television by a Japanese reporter. Asked about his views on the actions of the U.S. Government, he strongly affirmed his government’s position, in defiance of his captors’ instructions; he prepared himself for a torture session that was sure to follow.

While speaking on camera, he blinked in Morse code the word “T-O-R-T-U-R-E.” Eventually, the videotape was widely circulated and reviewed by U.S. Naval Intelligence. Denton’s one-word report, delivered in Morse code, was the first clear confirmation received by U.S. Intelligence that American POWs were, in fact, being tortured.

He later speculated that the North Vietnamese did not learn of his blinking message until 1974. The taped interview is among the holdings of the Special Media Archives—Records of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Promoted during his captivity, Captain Denton was released on February 12, 1973. After retiring from the U.S. Navy as a rear admiral, he was elected to the U.S. Senate where he served from 1981 until 1987.

My father-in-law returning to USS Hornet after bombing fuel depot on Cebu Island 1944. Cmdr. Everett Fulton was a decorated pilot during WWII and instructor during Korean War. Recently passed away at age 93...one of the finest men I have ever known. edit: sorry, first time posting an image. Hopefully worked this time. FYI. My FIL was actually graduated tops in his flight class, which included GHW Bush. He said many times "I never got shot down but George did...twice!"
