I would say that canoes are the most versatile, but SOTs are fishing machines.

Well i think i've decided SOT. What is a decent kayak? I'm thinking it will probably be used 75/25 cruising/fishing.

I am partial to fast boats, because i travel far while fishing. I have a Native Manta Ray 14' and a Native Magic 14.5'. Long boats are good for distances. If you want to carry a dog, i would go with a Native Ultimate or a canoe. If just fishing/paddling, maybe a Jackson Coosa or one of those new Native Slayers. They are more stable for newcomers, but expensive.

Again, get on Craigslist and find a used boat. Ocean Kayak Prowler, Hobie, any of the above listed boats, etc.
