My buddy is looking at buying a used Arctic Cat ATV and asked if I knew of any common problems with them or things to look for before purchasing. I told him I would consult the expertise of the OB.

A buddy of mine has a big 650 or something. It's like 2 years old and the transmission just went out in it.
My dad had a late 90's model... POS!!

my dad and i had one new (about 10 years ago). i was a piece of shite once it went through sand. im sure they have improved somewhat, but i would put them in the same class as polaris: shite

Ok. So what would you recommend? A lot of it comes down to how you take care of it

No love for the Polaris huh?
Been thinking about getting one.

i would buy a used honda foreman that met what my budget was. but yes, obviously taking care of it is a big issue. we have some rough terrain but never dog our bikes and those 2 brands have given up the most. now if he is riding around with no mud, sand, gravel, hills, then any bike would probably work

Elaborate? I'm ignorant of this "problem."
I've been searching and pricing them out and it looks like I get more out of a Polaris than a Honda for the money as far as options/accessories go.

They, to my knowledge, do not build a chain driven ATV anymore.
You must've had like a 1989 model.

Polaris will be your best bet as far as the amount of accessories go. They make a good machine. I have owned several Honda's, Polaris', Kawasaki's and have never had a problem out of any of them other than what I caused. You won't go wrong if you decide to purchase a Polaris. I have a diesel Ranger and have had no problems out of it. Also have a Kawasaki Teryx and Kawasaki Brute Force with no problems other than broken axles (which were alcohol and big tire induced carnage).

Good to know.
The built in storage compartments were nice. Put all my snacks in on the way to the deer stand.

1.) Honda
2.) Yamaha

Arctic shat. My wife's uncle has one, and every time he rides it's in the shop. No mud ridding, just around the lease. It's a piece of shite. I have love for the rzr and ranger, but that's as far as I go with Polaris. Get a Honda.

New artic cats arent bad anymore. Now in the 90's they were crap. Neither is polaris. Honda isn't the cream of crop anymore. Now you want the best get a can am.

My brother and I both have '06 Arctic Cats. The ONLY issue we have had with them are the shock mount bushings. Back then they made them 1 piece and they wore out. The replacements are 2 piece and seem to be much better. They were expensive though. Other than that, they have been more than quality machines. We have not had the first mechanical problem with either of them.
Knock on wood.
