Probably should've made them watch Lincoln instead.

Yeah...Lincoln would have been a more relevant film to watch.

Django is "historically accurate"?

Not saying I agree with the teacher but people get so butthurt over the dumbest things.
Posted on 1/23/13 at 2:02 pm to atlau
why is this a story? parents get upset over teacher-chosen movies all the time

Pretty much how I feel. A 15 year old should be able to handle the themes in Django. Shielding them from it is stupid imo. On the other hand, going to see a movie like Django as an academic exercise seems pretty crazy to me unless you are in a theater class or something like that.

Well that is not really for you or the teacher to decide now is it ?

Life will.

It's rated R, they aren't even allowed in the theater without someone over 18.
I'm sure they could get in theater but assigning a grade to something that requires the student be duplicitous is stupid IMO.

The only problem I have with any of this is that a teacher thinks Django has anything with any of the real problems of slavery or had any historical truth to it at all.

That is not for the teacher decide. I think the parents have a right to a say, don't you?

I wasn't defending the teachers assignment. I was just saying that I wouldn't be personally upset by my hypothetical 15 year old watching the movie imo. The rating system is pretty meaningless imo. I think I'm entitled to an opinion imo, don't you? I'll post this again:

I havent seen Django , but its prolly a thousand times tamer than watching an abortion like I had to do in HS.

We couldn't watch anything other than 'G' rated movies until I got to high school and they bumped it all the way up to 'PG'
Meanwhile I had relatives in other places telling me they were watching stuff like Amistad in class

Parents have the right to decide yes or no on something like that. I know I wouldn't let my kids watch it at that age. Of course I'll never watch it or any other Tarantino movie myself either.

Nah I'm sure there's common ground somewhere -
unless you say something bad about chuck.
