In the commentary it was explained that the middle car (I forgot what it was) represented a working mans car while the others were cars shunned by blue collar society.

I thought it was that the BMW and the Bug are objects people define themselves by.....
BMW "I'm a success, you must envy me"
BUG "I'm a happy, free, fun, person"

like the opening when he says 'what kind of dining set defines me as a person?'?
