Who on here has gone digital with their movies and tv shows? I have some stuff but havn't made the full conversion because no one program seems to really grab me. For the record I am referring to owning, not renting services like netflix.

I was just staring at a huge box of dvds, wondering how long it would take for me to rip them all. Does that count?

Ha I have had the same thought.

I'm trying to get my mom to do this since she has so many. She even lost a huge collection of dvd's after Katrina and I can't convince her to rip them.

I have about 150 gigs left on a 1 TB harddrive of movies in mp4 format.

How many movies will fit on a 1 TB drive?
Also, what program would I use to rip my DVD's?
I have about 1,000 dvd's give or take.

DVDs max out around 8 GB each if you do straight rips with no re-encoding. If you re-encode with H264, which is a lot more efficient, 1-2 GB each would be typical. If you use Handbrake, make sure you leave anamorphic enabled for DVDs.

Does anyone one buy purely digital now? If so from where?

Then what do I do to get it on my TV?
Is there something with HDMI I could plug in?
I would like to avoid using my PC to play them.

You could put them on a share or USB drive or NAS and use a WDTV Live to play them. It plays just about everything and can even scrape metadata based on filenames to provide full information on movies, including artwork. An Apple TV would be pretty much limited to MP4 files and is really best used only if you get a lot of content from iTunes.
If menu structure is important to you, I dunno about the streamers. Windows Media Center certainly supports DVD menus, as do XBMC and VLC. However, you have to rip the full DVD structure, sacrificing re-encoding with H264, which means huge files, up to 8 GB and change per disc. It may be true that XBMC and VLC support menus in .iso files, but Media Center does not even see .iso files.

Would this work?
Could I piggy back another hard drive off of it?

I use dvd catalyst or freemake video converter
I have 325 movies on it right now.

I did some reading last night and I think my best bet is the WD TV Live with a 3 TB WD My Book hooked to it.
