Homebrewing: making a strawberry ale

Suggestions on how to get the strawberry flavor. I could half arse it and just use an AHS strawberry extract when bottling but would rather use real strawberries at secondary or something. Is this possible? How to sanitize strawberries?

The only time I added fruit I did it with blueberries. I froze/thawed them a couple times to break down the cells walls, or something like that. Not real sure. Someone told me to do it, so I did it. I then put them in a big pot and mashed them up and brought the pot to 160 degrees for about 20 minutes. I let them cool slightly and then put them in a bucket. I racked the primary in to the buckets and let it sit for a couple weeks.
I didn't really care for the finished beer, but all my friends still request it. I don't have the original recipe, so I can't recreate it.
ETA: I do remember it was 10 lbs of blueberries.

I've used a ton of strawberries that I froze first then dunked in star san then cut in half in a Honey Blonde ale from AHS.
I personally thought it turned out great.

when using blueberries, I washed them and froze them until ready to use, then I soaked them in 180 degree water for 10-15 minutes or so
I'd recommend using real ingredients over extract when possible

This, unless you particularly like the taste of Leinenkugel.

I brewed AHS Texas Blonde Ale and then put five pounds of frozen strawberries in the secondary. While it was in the secondary, I lowered the temp on my fermentation chamber to around 50 degrees so that it wouldn't ferment any further. I thought the beer came out good and my wife liked it.
I read that if you allow it to keep fermenting it will come out more tart and dry.

I used blackberries in my wheat ale. 5-6 lbs. I squirted a little star san on them and froze them. Then i had to put 5-6 lbs. of blackberries in a carboy. Huge pain in the arse, but it came out great. (secondaried on top of the blackberries).I think next time i will either cook them for about 10 minutes in some water or do the same with starsan that i did before. However, this time i will cut them in half or quarter the blackberries.

my blueberry wheat came out a little dry and tart, but I'd prefer it that way to a sweet, fruity beer

I think I would prefer this as well.

I've had the best results using a mixture of real fruit puree and extract. I use 5lbs vintners harvest puree for 5 gallons and then add extract to taste when I keg. I normally end up using less than 1/2 the recommended amount extract.
I find the puree gives the beer a more 'real' fruit flavor and the extracts will give it a nicer aromatic that people are expecting.
When I've used just extract the beer tastes fake and when I've used just fruit I don't get the aroma I'm looking for.
