Bad idea.

I have kids at home, so I don't leave things loaded (a round in the chamber) unless they are in a safe.
Every "home defense" gun has a loaded magazine, tube, etc, so that they could be ready to go quickly. Don't know what I will do when my children become old enough to rack a slide.

If your weapon is a pistol, I would keep the chamber loaded, safety on (if applicable), in a quick-access pistol safe (like GunVault).
I can see the arguments for wanting it to be more accessible than that.

Same here. Mine isn't in reach of my kids either.
