Why Do People Go to the Movies if All They Are Going to Do Is Talk?

Between the couple next to me carrying on a conversation with each other and commenting on every scene, the girl in front of me illuminating the theater with the glow of her phone every 5 minutes, and the black girl behind me talking to herself allowed (Damn, oh no you didn't, aw hell nah), it completely took me out of the movie. I also don't get how someone watching a movie acts like what they are watching is happening live in real life by saying things aloud for everyone to hear. "Oh my god" "Can you believe they did that?" "What are you doing?" It's make believe. It's not really happening. Keep your comments to yourself. If not Redbox the movie so you can interrupt to your heart's content. I really wish all theaters had a usher stationed in each room to patrol this crap.

It pisses me off to no end. Unless you're seeing something like Jackass, film is not designed to be a social event.

To get away from their kids mainly, but they definitely need to STFU.

You gotta pick your times man. Don't go to a night showing of a movie and expect to get a good experience. Early bird gets the worm

I'm going to start going to the movies a month after their release so the crowd is dead. The problem with that is they pull under performing movies after a few weeks (Texas Chainsaw made like $5 million this week after its second week of release so I doubt its long for this world). I went at a noon showing and still had to deal with this crap. And when you call them out for it YOU'RE the a-hole.

Curious, what movie were you watching?
I guess you answered right before my post.
That still makes no sense why people would carry on convo like that.

When the wife and I went to see The Hobbit it was pretty crowded. Chick sat down next to me with her kid (too young IMO to see this movie) and started texting away and laughing. I was ok with it for the previews, but 5 min into the movie I told her to turn her fricking phone off because the light is distracting. I hate when people do shite like this and have no problem telling them off.

Every time I go to the movies they have their teenage employees just standing around in the halls bullshitting with each other. If they are paying them to work, the least they could do is station one in each theater to control this crap. Before the movies air a warning saying your ticket does not guarantee you the privledge of watching a movie. If you are disrupting the movie going environment for others, you will be asked to leave with no refund. The worst part is I expect this behavior from kids but adults?

With the exception of the "Aw, hell nah" girl behind me, they were all white too. I just hate people in general. Especially large crowds of them.

I rarely ever go to the movies because people are so fricking rude. I would rather just wait for 99% of movies and watch them on RedBox that pay $20 and have people talking the whole time.
I went and told on a dude during TDKR because he was laying down, across 4-5 seats, fricking sleeping and snoring loud as hell. I guess he was cold too because he was using the curtain that covers the wall up for a blanket. Damndest thing I've ever seen.
I don't understand paying for a ticket and concessions to come in a theater to sleep.
I had two Kevin Smith lookalikes behind be who wouldn't stfu for the longest during Avengers. I finally said something when the dirty looks didn't work.
I wish they had headphones in the theater, that still gave you theater quality sound.

I saw Jersey Boys Friday night (Broadway show about the Four Seasons).
Woman behind me sang along loudly with every song, and when they were talking, she was talking about how she went to EVERY concert of their in the area when she was a kid....
I wanted to strangle her.

So how did you like A Haunted House?
Posted on 1/13/13 at 11:11 pm to TotesMcGotes
I can only imagine how bad A Haunted House would have been.

I know it sounds mean, but it mainly boils down to the education/common sense level of people in the area where you're watching the movie. For example if you were to watch a movie at a theater somewhere in .... lets say Boston or San Francisco, then you likely wouldn't have anywhere near the amount of problems that you would watching at a theater in a third rate city like Baton Rouge.

This subject alternately makes me seethe as well as fascinates me. I wish there were studies done on why this problem has become so prevalent within the last decade.

Good point. It didn't used to be as bad as it is now.
I think shorter attention spans, cell phones, and just an overall increase in rude and stupid arse people in the general population has helped make it more prevalent.
Also, maybe the ease of seeing a movie again (RedBox, downloading, etc) makes people less apt to pay attention in theaters?

I will admit that I will occasionally take my phone out to see the time (especially during long arse movies like Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, and The Hobbit) but I always try to angle it as to not lit up the room.

I got some messicans kicked out not too long ago because one girl was(shite you not) fricking translating the WHOLE MOVIE to two other guys beside her. After the manager spoke to them, they left.
Had a huge group of black teenagers watching Django and they were laughing and talking after every line jamie foxx said. Asked them to stop with all the talking and they didnt. I got up and told the manager and they got kicked out.
I dont get to go to movies that often so Im not gonna spend $30-40 listening to some assholes laugh or talk the whole time. I dont see the reason in going to the theater to run your fricking mouth the whole time. If you want to go to shoot the shite, go to a bar and watch tv or redbox it.
