I think he did this to illustrate the absurdity of the people asking for a split.
Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but I've always found him to be well informed on HS sports.

He is pointing out the absurdity
The iota principal is butt hurt because they had a great football program in the 90s, they had idiots there as coaches that ruined it and now their best football players want to go to notre dame and they can't stand it. They kicked out a kid recently, the kid transferred to notre dame, the iota principal filed a complaint and they had a hearing.
