The difference between the one last night and the one in 2004 is that the wrong call was made in 2004?
Why? The kicker kicked the ball into a Texas lineman, which should have blown the play dead. Naturally, because it was Texas, the refs made sure they got the point.

Never have seen it, never knew about it. I'd venture to say 99% of football fans could say he same thing.

It looked to me like the difference in last night and UT-A&M was last night Kansas St. actually got the ball outside of the goal line then retreated into the end zone. In the other game, it looked like the ball landed in the end zone and A&M just recovered it.

I have seen a fair catch kick. But I had never seen, or even heard of, a one-point safety before.

Fair catch kicks are somewhat common. At the end of the half when a team just pooches it high, it is not uncommon at all for the up-man to call for the fair catch.

Not in about 40 years, and I'm damned if I can figure out why. With today's kickers, that ought to be almost routine on any punt or kickoff with less than a minute left in a half, outside the recievers' 20.

That's just the catch part. If I remember the rule correctly (and it's actually still a rule), the receiving team is also allowed to try a completely unmolested field goal from the spot of the fair catch.

While using the kickoff tee

Not sure if this was covered, but if Oregon had been going for 2 instead of kicking and extra point and something similar had happened, as in a fumble recovered on the one then taken backwards into the end zone by the defensive team, would it be a one point safety as well? Or would Oregon get 2 points?
