its ebb and flow with offensive vs. defense. The wishbone used to be unstoppable but no one plays that nowadays.
The spread will stick around for a good long time, but defenses will adapt, and the shootouts will slowly die.

The one difference that may allow this style to stick around for a long time is defenses are no longer allowed to hit anyone hard. There is no price to pay for the QB dropping back 50 times a game or WRs running routes over the middle. 15 yard flag every time you think about hitting them hard.
