Looking ahead to 2013 season

Miles made the comment that the 2013 offense might be his best yet. Granted, that's probably something over 90% of coaches will say about "next year", but how much is in place for it to be true?
What we have coming back:
1) a QB in Mett who seems very skilled, and made a lot of progress over the course of the season. He went from a big liability in the early games, to the reason we won or stayed competitive from the Bama game on; and he was asked to win the bowl game at the end (the infamous 3 pass drive that failed).
My guess- Mett should be at least as competent in game 1 next year, as he was in the 2nd half of this season. That should help a lot, and if he continues to progress, he might just be special by this time next year.
2) Running backs. None of the upperclassmen have done anything to seriously suggest they should leave early, so depth should continue. Hill will come in as the established starter, with a yr under his belt (as compared to coming off a nightmare year of not being on a team, and with ugly legal issues dominating his life), so he should be in better condition, and a better back.
3) O-line. Many injuries led to many guys playing early this year, maybe before they were ready. as tough as it was this season, it should make the line stronger next- lots of experienced players who now know what is required firsthand. I expect the line to be at least a non-factor (in other words, they won't be a reason why we lose a game), with the exception of maybe against a team like Bama- and honestly, the line held up well against Bama this season, so I think they will do so next too.
4) Receivers- will be key. Landry has emerged after a painful start to this season, so let's hope he continues to develop into our next D Bowe. Beckham- he took a step back, but there is a reason the phrase "sophomore slump" has been coined; it happens a lot. Let's hope he also returns to form. His freshman yr, he was a reliable 2nd WR. This year, he showed promise of big play ability. If he can become a reliable WR WITH big play ability, then things will be a whole lot easier for everyone else.
re: receivers, it would be nice to have a tight end. Seeing as how the NFL loves them some basketball TEs, maybe our football recruiters can tag along with Johnny Jones on the road (seriously). There has to be a couple of 6-5 forwards and centers in Louisiana and the surrounding area who are athletic, but can't play bball on the college level, maybe they can't score on anything other than a dunk. Let's put pads on a couple and see if they can catch the fricking football. Tell them- you can't be the next LeBron, but you might be the next Jimmy Graham.

we've had TEs in Miles' tenure.....we just don't use them....i truly believed the TEs would flourish in 2010/2011 with the QB issues we had; but they never relied on the TEs as their outlet or a threat as much....too sad

They aren't even close to being similar in play style. Did you just throw a recently successful LSU wideout into your post for comparison?

quote:Well, that is a couple weeks away likely. Honestly, regarding offense, has anyone shown you enough to worry about them leaving? Think about it as, say, a Saints fan. Would you be excited to add anyone LSU has on offense right now? The o-line has been average overall, the older backs inconsistent and injury-prone, the tight ends and older WRs have been invisible. You might want the fullback, but that's still an undrafted free agent position. The QB (Mett) has stated he's returning, and as of now, he's basically practice squad material.

quote:Yeah, pretty much I did just toss in a successful WR for comparison. I'm assuming Landry will take Bowe's place as the main WR in a passing offense where others also catch the ball (Beckham taking Davis' spot as "other capable guy").

The thought being- could Landry and Beckham have similar numbers as Bowe and Davis, if we have an '06 offense where Mett is playing the role of JaMarcus? My answer is- I hope so.
Now, there are some differences. I think Hill is a better back than Hester. The problem is, Early Doucet was the 3rd WR on the 06 offense- do we have anybody able to produce like him in that role?
Re Ware being gone, he's a nice back when healthy. Hill's success makes him a backup, and Hilliard's presence makes him expendable. I doubt he would go before the 4th round at the absolute earliest.

who cares...there will be more suspensions due to lack of discipline and miles running the game and clock !!! Its just hard to watch...
