I know this must have been talked about on here at some point in time. But I don't remember ever seeing a discusion and didn't find one with a search.
Anyway - this has been playing lately and we were watching it a day or so ago with the family. My father in law contends that Terrance Mann (the James Earl Jones charcter) was dead and that's why he was invited into the corn field
Both my wife and I never got that impression fromthe movie. But from a quick Google, there does seem to be some thought out there that he may hae died at some point in the movie or at least was embrasing death by going into the corn.
I'm pretty certain he wasn't dead at the beginning. The gas station guy that Ray bribes knew where he lived. And he talks to several peope in the little Minnesota town that knew Doc Graham. He even takes phone message from Ray' wife.
I guess there is a chance that he dies at some point later in the movie or that he is embrasing death by going into the corn with the players.
Any thoughts?

I can see the embracing death part. But in no way did I think he was dead at any point in the film

Na! I never thought he was dead.
However, why then did they allow him to go with them if he wasn't? That never made much sense to me.

The whole thing takes place in Kevin Costner's head while he's having some kind of mid-life breakdown thinking about his daddy, so I never put too much thought into why dead people and living people were shooting the shite together in a fricking corn field.

Because he was so well spoken.

It was all a dream

I've read that the guy that wrote the book did it in some kind of effort to get J.D. Sallinger to come out of reclusiveness. Apparently the book focused much more on the Mann character than the movie did and there were some changes in adopting it to the screen.
Who knows. I never really got the idea that it was all a dream though. That would be a bummer when he woke up and the farm was still pretty much in heavy debt. (I'm thinking it wasn't just building the baseball field that led to it's financial problems).

Haven't thought of this, but did find it puzzling that Mann was so trusting of a bunch of white baseball players with organized crime ties from the early 20th century.

They needed a token black guy.

I guess it's possible that Mann had just expired before Costner knocked on his door...hence the bribed guy knowing where he lived (noone knew he was dead yet cuz recluse.)
but, since when did M Night shyamalan direct "Field of Dreams"?

Actually I believe it was his Dad that reported him missing.
And I never thought he was dead either. Just that he was embracing death by going into the corn.

He does kinda reappear in front of Costner's car in a ghostly way..."Ease his pain"
