No, they are saying that because it happens all the time with the Oscars. Do you really think Scent of a Woman was Al Pacinos best acting job? The Departed was Scorsese's best moive? Come on, those were straight up, we fricked up, you guys should have won a long time ago, so here you go awards. And there are many other examples.
Personally I thinking great acting is over rated. Unless someone is really bad (Sophia Copolla GF III) or completely out of place (Keanu Reeves in Dracula) at a certain level its fine.
ETA: I just realized the 2 examples i gave were movies directed by FFC, which was purely by accident

Actually I find a lot of GREAT ACTING! to be distracting. I far prefer more subtle roles in which the actor isn't nearly as showy. I've made this argument before, but it's why I loved Benjamin Button so much - Brad Pitt really pulls off a difficult role by almost standing outside the movie.
