From a perspective of the University of Michigan standpoint, why is Les Miles not going on his fifth year as Head Coach of UM?? He had proven he could continue success at a major program. He had taken his team to the conference championship in the toughest league in the country. His recruiting prowess was established. Although not known at the time he would be playing for a NC in a few weeks. His character is lauded on this board. He played there and was a disciple of their legendary coach. He coached there for many years. Seems like they would have gone full guns to get him in the program. And if so I think he would have jumped at the time. Seems like I remember a major faction within the university not high on the idea. Anybody know the reason for this? I do not think LSU has anyone with this list of attributes currently that could go after when we have a job opening. Have always been curious about this. Anyone know WHY NOT???

my theory
Michigan offer Miles the job in 2007
Miles accepted the offer in principle
Someone within the Michigan AD leaked the info to ESPN
ESPN reported Miles to Michigan
Miles basically said that if he could not trust Michigan right then and there, that he had no reason to ever trust them at any other time. he then told them no thanks
Michigan has since offered, but I believe Miles is very happy now in his position of competitiveness at LSU and within the SEC

If he left today, Coach Hud from ULL would jump in a New York or a Lafayette second.

There was a whole book chapter written on this topic. Go read it. Summary: Lloyd Carr hates Miles and therefore scuttle Michigan's attempt to offer him the job.

Apparently they offered him 4.25M/year and he said "No", twice (when Rich Rod and Brady Hoke got the jobs).
It will never be an "official" offer because the offers never are unless the coach accepts. Similar to the Arkansas "offer" a month or so ago.
Reality is that many LSU fans don't realize how lucky we are to have a coach that believes we are a destination program. He doesn't want to leave. He wants to continue to build the LSU program, probably until he retires. Not many coaches these days make that decision. From everything I have read from AD interviews, to Miles interviews, to the media; it appears Miles prefers continuity and longevity over the high payday becasue he wants to create at LSU the kind of legacy his mentor created at his alma mater. He's been here 8 years and won 85 games. He's loved by everyone in CFB outside the LSU fanbase, and loved by most of the LSU fanbase as well. He's great publicity for the program, and he's a beast recruiter, and he wants to be at LSU. You can't really ask for more imo.
