I'd like to get about 40-50 coins graded because I think they would be in better than average condition, but the $$$ just don't make sense.

I am not a fan of slabbed (graded) coins and do not own a slabbed item. The reason for this is the majority of my collection was put together prior to the prevalence of the grading services. And, I really don't care if it has a grade or not; I am a collector. Who cares if it's MS69. If it's a good coin and in good condition - buy it.

Buy the coin, not the plastic case.

Also, in order to know if it's in good condition this book is a good reference.
