In honor of the 2000th post, figured I'd liven this thread up a little bit

JPS 18 is a damn fine bourbon. I've found you just have to search similar to scotch to find your niche within the field. If you like JPS 18, that's a wheated bourbon so you'd probably like more similar to that especially Pappy Van Winkle if you can find it

Have had the Pappy. I prefer to spend around $100 a bottle for a whisky
Just don't think bourbons can add enough character or complexity with aging.
Now George T Stagg is a hell of a sipping whiskey, at 143 proof I find it the most like a scotch in complexity

Fair enough.
I haven't had it personally, but Angel's Envy is trying new things to add some complexity. Their first main one was finished in port wine barrels and they have a new one coming out that's a rye finished in rum casks.

I was recently given a small oak barrel for aging bourbon. I was told due to its size, that it will "age" the bourbon more quickly. I'm skeptical to say the least but I want to give it a shot. It will hold slightly more than 1.75 liters, so I'm looking for a bourbon sold in that size. Anything you would recommend? Right now I'm considering using buffalo trace. If it helps, my everyday bourbon is eagle rare, and I also like Noahs Mill and Bookers.

I like Buffalo trace. Nothing fancy or expensive but a solid drink. I say try it out because its not to expensive to try out in your barrel

That's what I was thinking. I like Buffalo Trace and for the price I wouldn't be too pissed off if I screwed it up.

Question for you scotch gurus...
My buddy recently told me he wants to start trying some Scotches. He's got no experience drinking scotch. I don't have much experience myself, but I'd like to give it a try as well. I want to get him a decent bottle for his housewarming party for us to drink. Any recommendations?

PSA
4 roses limited edition 2013 is releasing very soon. I contacted the 4 roses regional sales rep for FL and all cases will be delivered in the next 10 days! I requested several bottles from different stores hoping they get a case (6 bottles). Fingers crossed, the entire state of FL is only getting 132 bottles.

I'd give up til fall... There wont be any released until then (no spring release this year) and I'd say the chance of finding a bottle for sale on a shelf in the lower 48 is slim to none. Go get a bottle of WL Weller 12. Can't get much closer to Pappy 15 than that, seriously.

Really depends on your tastes. I'm a big fan of the Speysides which are very similar to bourbons. Some of my favorites in there are Balvenie 12, Glenfiddich 18, Aberlour 12, Cragganmore. If you like peat, go with something like Laphroig, Lagavulin or something. There are a ton of options and all depends on your tastes.
This has been posted before, but should help guide you.

I prefer single barrel for the regular edition. The 2012 Limited Edition Small Batch was great, though.

agreed... the regular small batch isnt bad at all and i'd say it's a little more mellow than the single barrel. that being said, the single barrel has more body and just tastes like a little higher quality product.
i have been on an unsuccessful hunt for the small batch limited edition though.
