Looking to my first handgun I'm slightly familiar I might go shoot 1-2 times a years this will be mainly for self defense
Someone else mentioned an exact response to him but I'll also back him up... This is a TERRIBLE idea. I would say once every 2-3 months minimum practice time. You need to have all the motions engrained in your subconscious because it will be doing most of the work when you're pumped full of adrenaline.

Carry or home? There's a big difference.
Carry:
Ruger KLCR (Lightweight Compact Revolver; the K version is .357 magnum)
Ruger SP101 (a friend of mine just bought one; built like a tank)
Or S&W Airweight
Home defense:
Ruger GP100
S&W 686P (7 shot version)
But all in all, you need to hold these before you purchase them. If you want a good semi auto that doesn't feel like you're gripping a 2x4 made of human fecal matter, get a S&W M&P, Ruger SR, or Springfield XD or XDm before you get a shite pot called a Glock. All of you Glock lovers can suck it.

And just so you don't say "TL;DR" I'll reiterate the most important part of that post:
The gun WILL CHOOSE YOU, not vice versa. Go to a store and hold them and buy what is most comfortable, even if it's some shitty Glock.
Comfort is paramount when buying a handgun. It would suck if your family depended on it and you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.
Go to a store and hold them. This will also dictate if you get a full sized revolver, compact revolver, subcompact revolver, full sized semi auto, compact semi auto, or subcompact semi auto. Choose wisely.
