I know this has probably been talked about a lot, but I didn't find anything on a search.
Looking to my first handgun I'm slightly familiar I might go shoot 1-2 times a years this will be mainly for self defense
From my research I'm looking for a .357 mag Revolver
I know Ruger and S&W are good is Tarus and Rossi Junk?
looking to keep it under 500 preferable less

If you are set on a revolver, search the used gun sites for a used Ruger or SW. Don't get a Rossi.

If you aren't set on a revolver, the Glock 19 is an excellent choice.

I don't think you can buy a Smith 357 brand new for less than 500.
If budget is your only restraint, get a Taurus. You can't go wrong with a revolver of any kind, IMO. A cheaper revolver is much more reliable than a cheap automatic pistol.

He can find a good used Smith or Ruger for under 500. That is what I would do.

I have a Ruger gp100 and really enjoy shooting that gun. Ruger also makes a sp100 and a LCR that would be good.
Smith makes great guns as well
Rossi is junk
Taurus isn't junk but it isn't the best, but they have very good customer service, at least that's what a very good friend of mine that sells guns told me.

Mr. Tide,
I happen to be an expert on this subject due to my recent, many months research on said topic.
In my unhumble, but very professional opinion, I would highly recommend the Ruger LCR.

Your biggest decision is what barrel length to get. You'll probably end up buying 2 revolvers.
I'd get a 1 7/8" pocket .38 special first and a 4" .357 later. I prefer S&W over Ruger.

Used, yes.
I'd say ask for gift cards to either bps or cabela's for Christmas from everyone then go buy whatever he wants. Maybe he can get two good guns for what he is wanting to spend today.

Didn't your research end by starting a thread asking which one we would prefer?

That would be a S&W Ladysmith and is a damn fine gun for either gender.

Why did you settle on this one?

hammerless makes it easier to pull from pocket holster imo.., grip felt better in my hand than the smith and wesson... i didnt like the built in lazer sight in the bodyguard up high on the gun with thumb switch.. LCR was a smoother trigger pul..
I was strictly comparing Ruger LCR with Smith Bodyguard.. These were the 2 that I felt were the best and closest to what I wanted in a cc gun..
