If its his first deer or something like that I agree...otherwise 40 year old men who have hunted there whole lives shooting young bucks just to say they killed something with horns is nothing to get pumped up about...

Says you. If he's happy let the man be happy. It might be a big accomplishment where he hunts.

It's all relative to where you are. A 12" wide 8 point is a big buck in some places.

Only because people shot the first deer they see with horns... If people would learn to let things walk deer could grow to they full potential.

And there is a difference between a 4.5 / 5.5 year old 8pt vs a 2.5 yr old 8pt.

If that's what they like doing then more power to em. They might care more about the experience than the horns.

And some places wouldn't grow huge deer if they all lived to be 20 years old. It's south Louisiana, not Kentucky.

But I digress. Start a thread about it if you want to discuss it more. No need to shite this guys bragging thread all up.

It doesn't matter how big the deer in your area grow, your goal should be to shoot mature bucks, not young ones.

If you hunt for the experience than shooting something should be a bonus not a requirement to feel you have done something.

Nobody hunts to feed there families like our grandfathers and great grandfathers did.

Solid sig-worthy quote right there.

If you get to hunt a lot, I agree. But some people only get a couple weekends per year to hunt. If you are implying they shouldn't shoot a young deer if it's the only deer they get a shot at during a given year GTFO with that communist talk.

Says you. My family goes through 6-8 deer per year. That's not to mention the other game and fish we consume. Hunting is not economical, and yes it is a hobby. Some people, such as myself, splurge on financing hunting by cutting back spending in other areas. Yes, the experience is a big part of it, but dammit sometimes you have to bring something home to eat.

That is my point and if you want to shoot young bucks go for it. I don't care what you shoot as long as its legal. But my point is bragging about shooting a 2 yr old 8pt is really not that impressive.

But if thats how you choose to hunt you can't bitch in the next breath about how you never see any big bucks.

You should shoot whatever is legal and makes you feel like you accomplished your goal. If a 1.5 year old 10" wide 8 point is a trophy to a man, congratulate him. He's accomplished his goal and is happy.

agreed if its his first deer or first with a bow. once this goal has been met you make new goals, you don't keep repeating the same goal and acting like it was a huge accomplishment.

That's pathetic man. Just because it isn't a trophy to you doesn't mean it isn't to someone else. This is a sad world when a man can't be excited about his kill without somebody talking him down for it.

That's not what you said ->

You sound like a typical Texas hunter. Do you sit in a box stand overlooking a feeder? Walking through the swamp to kill a spike is much more of a rewarding experience in my opinion than sitting in a box stand overlooking a feeder waiting on the 5.5 yr old 10 pt you've been seeing on camera pics at the feeder every afternoon. Not everyone is trying to farm deer. Let people hunt and don't tell them what you think they should shoot. It will make you sound like less of a jackass.

Its sad that you would want to spend good money to be on a lease where all the lease members shot 1.5 year old 10" wide 8 pts...do this for a couple of years and you will be pissing and moaning about not seeing any bucks.

That's you're opinion and your opinion is not law. You represent perfectly what I do not like about many modern hunters.
