Apples and hand grenades. Basically, you just gave two options:
1. No team
2. A team named Pelicans
Of course people will deal with it. However, if you are going to take the step of renaming, why not something you like. In my opinion, Pelicans is lame. I'm sorry. It's just clumsy, the animal AND the word. Keep saying it. Call a game in your head if you need to. It is just awkward all around.

I think someone did a fleur du lis with a pelican at some point. Something tells me it will be incorporated into whatever the logo is.
