I wouldn't be happy w/ Kirby Smart, but I'd be okay with it. He has some positives: SEC player, smart guy, son of a coach, successful career as an assistant. But he has never been a head coach and it worries me that he is the DC but Saban is a defensive coach so who's to say it isn't Saban responsible for Smart's success?
There are lots of people I would rather have. I'm not sure if any or all of them were offered and turned us down, but if not, we should go through all of them before Smart: Patterson, Peterson, Jimbo Fisher, Jeff Fischer, Larry Fedora. Maybe even Gus.
So at the end of the day, I wouldn't be "happy" b/c I think there were some better candidates out there, but I wouldn't think it was a terrible hire either.
