They were hoping NIU would beat Kent St so 2 Big XII teams would go the BCS games. They got excited when that happened. I do not think they anticipated NIU going to a BCS game.
That pretty much shows their shortsightedness right there. They should have planning for a contingency no matter what.

Why would a company based in Plano Texas want Ohio in the bowl more than Tech? Are they lacking distributors in the MAC area or are they rewarding the MAC for having so many distributors?
According to a reporter with the Shreveport Times, business dealings in the Ohio area was a determinant.

I need to develop a new recruiting base along the Eastern side of this country. If the Liberty Bowl is considering me, and I can establish some foundation in the Memphis recruiting community,
So Tech playing in the Liberty Bowl is going to open up the Memphis recruiting area? The area surrounded by the SEC is going to open up to Tech because of the Liberty Bowl?

Ask Advocare. They have made public statements to Shreveport media supporting my statement.
yea, b/c after they have made their selection they are going to publicly say they didn't really want Ohio.
it makes TONS of sense to badmouth one of the teams in a game you are promoting.

It's obvious you don't understand college football recruiting.

What is so damn awful about playing ULM from a Tech perspective? Is it simply because Tech feels they are better than ULM?
They are right down I-20 from each other. They compete for local recruits and most importantly... fans. Tech would like nothing more for ULM to just close shop. The more interest that is generated in their program, the worse it is for Tech.
But a bowl game should be different... the interest is already there. The best thing to do would be to beat them into submission.

I know former college athletes and coaches. I also know people who take the long view with these things...

Van de Velde told Tim Brando today that the Liberty Bowl told him and WAC commissioner that they were going to take Tech "no matter what."
The I Bowl was the contingency, but it was too late... they had moved on.

No, it's obvious YOU don't understand college football recruiting.
As in, if Tech is going up against another school for an athlete, I can assure you that other school is going to use NOT going to a bowl game this year against Tech.

Again, if this were the truth, then the Liberty Bowl would have extended a formal invitation. They didn't.
Your AD is lying.

As they should have, because your arrogant AD told them to frick off.

NIU screwed it up. The "no matter what" turned into, "well, except for that."

He didn't put it that way, but he did not really give them a reason to believe Tech would be thrilled to be there either.

So, from Tech's perspective, ULM has much more to gain from playing Tech than Tech has to gain from playing ULM.

I gotta be honest -- they probably deserve a trip this year more than Purdue or Minnesota do. (ignoring all the contractual conference tie-ins)
But, ignoring all the tie-ins is purely delusional of the AD and other school administrations part. I feel terrible for their players that worked hard all season to go to a bowl. Still, the underlying message is we will never play ULM even in a bowl game. Tech is ignorant not taking advantage of the media coverage they would have received and yes the national media interest. ESPN could sell that hate rivalry I promise you. It would had been an awesome bowl with over 100 points scored easily.
Tech has some sort of complex. I mean LSU was regularly playing in the Independence Bowl during the 90's (3 times I believe). It's extra practice, money and promotion the AD basically threw away.

You can keep saying that but its just not true.
There were 3 non AQ teams that looked like they could jump into the top 16.
It was either going to be the MAC winner or Boise.
Stop repeating your idiot ADs taking points.
He is flat out wrong to call it a shock and clearly doesn't pay attention to college football.

So if they told him this, why no invitation?
The statement VDV gave about the Liberty bowl is like a drunk girl telling you at the bar she's having sex with you tonight, but she thinks this other guy is going to drive her to your place.
