I agree with you - my post above suggests that I'd be ok with Major...actually, I would much prefer someone with more experience. Major, for his own sake, needs to go the route you suggest and then, if he finds success, come back to Texas in the future (if he wants...by all accounts he wants to be the HC at Texas).

My point was that Mack's insecurity/ego is driving him to possibly "promote" Major as the next HC because, if Major is successful, Mack can sit back and take some credit for it. How do you think it looks if someone else comes in, let's say Petersen, and does well. Makes Mack look like more of an incompetent than he does now.

meh. I think people project their Machiavellian bullshite on public figures too much. It's probably that Mack actually likes Major and sees a lot of potential in him. Guy is doing what he thinks is best and while I'm certain his legacy is now on his mind, he's not trying to hamstring the program to make himself look better.

Lemmme get this straight, and correct me if I'm wrong... Major has been an Offensive Coordinator for one year under Saban at Bama - he's been a position coach at Texas - and folks are talking about him taking over one of the biggest, and most high-profile head coaching jobs in the nation?

Texas is HUGE, and they'd be willing to hire a guy that has zero experience as a HC, and has little to no experience running his own offense?

WTF?

yep. mack seems to have a giant ego. had he retired a few years ago, he'd have been able to settle in as a legend. now he's going to have a tarnished legacy. its doubtful he can turn anything around in the timeline demanded, so he's going to basically get forced out, and if they also prevent him from helping pass the torch, its gonna eat at him. if someone else comes in and kicks arse (which is what should happen at texas), he'll look more incompetent with each passing year. thats just got to eat at an ego like brown. you can be sure that he will do everything in his power to get his guy in the job, prob applewhite, so he can take as much credit as he can. if Texas would buy saban and would then win a couple of 'ships, MAck would be forgotten quickly.
