I agree. Mett had 266 yards passing after 3 quarters. Mett threw exactly 3 passes in the 4th quarter, and none traveled more than 8 yards down field. Les said it in his halftime interview with Gordy Rush, "We want to fix our running game." We led 20-10 at half because Mett and Landry were ripping apart the Bulldog defense, but Miles was disappointed that they couldn't run the ball against 8 men in the box. We were up 13 points with 9 minutes left in the game, the ball was at midfield, and we faced 3rd and 4. Instead of going for the knockout, and driving down the field to put State away, we run a fullback dive.
Pretty much the same thing he did on their second to last possession against Bama as well.

"they seem like they give too much ground initially and then don't break on the ball that well once it's in the air."
I do not profess to be an expert but this sure is what it looked like from the West Upper.
When I think of a true prevent D, I think of rushing only 3, dropping 8 and having 3 deep safeties. X and O guys: is this correct? Anyway, we are not doing that, but what we are doing is just not working and we are giving up 15 yard routes as if they were 5 yard routes AND we often give up the sideline, too. A real head scratcher when you consider how well the D has played on the whole.

If it is intended to philosophically be a prevent defense, or some hybrid of it, it's not being done correctly when we give up the sidelines that easily and give as big of a cushion as it looks like we are. In that instance, it's just a shitty defense. This is especially so if it's a one possession lead.
ETA: Oh, I see it now. Not a prevent defense or even close, although they were giving all kinds of different looks at the line. Just shitty play by us/good play by Bama.

Before this season everyone was so high on him and thought he would be gone in the first round. I tried to explain to ppl why he wouldn't and ppl jumped down my throat. I guess I was right.
Right about what? Simon has to play the number 1 receiver every week and has done a great job. You're acting like he's giving up td's and big plays every week.

quote:Agreed 100%. Ive heard a couple of douche bags on here saying Simon is struggling. When was this? Ive been to or watched every game and I dont recall him being a liability.

the ole prevent
In the words of Tom Landry, the prevent defense prevents you from winning. While it may not have cost us except for Bama, it has made some of the games closer than they should have been.

I like how that fact that we got the pick 6 covers up the fact that we almost allowed MSU (just like South Carolina, Texas A&M and Alabama) to drive the length of the field in late game situations with relative ease. Of course, I'm not sure how you can expect the players to have a killer instinct to put teams away, when you run a FB dive on 3 and 4 in the fourth quarter on your opponents side of the field. The play calling has gotten much better, however, two weeks in a row now we have played conservative when the opportunity to really throw the knock out punch on offense was presented.
This post covers soooooo many topics. Fans leaving early included. Best post of the week!!

Please baby Jesus and baby Mr. Coach Chavis; Remove the God Damn prevent formation at once. We do not know how to execute it properly. If its intended to hand out chunks of yards and a score within 60 secs, then its working.

And this is smart coaching?
